“What is the story about the new teenager that was brought to Mukti? I heard she was abandoned on the railway platform,” Sami curiously asked.

“Yes, Kalyani came with a note. Her clothes were torn and her hair matted.  It was hard for her to walk because when she was a child, a high fever left her handicapped. Let’s go visit her”, responded Flat Sujata.

When Sami and Flat Sujata reached the Jasmine Flower Family, they asked Kalyani to tell them her story. They wanted to know how she ended up at Mukti.

“I wondered where my parents were taking me. I had never been on a train, so it was exciting for me to see a railway station. My parents found a shady place for me to sit and told me they had to get some things but would be back in ten minutes. They never returned,” said Kalyani.

“How terrible” Flat Sujata said despairingly.  Sami wanted to know what happened next.

“As the sun began to set, I became terrified of being alone. If I’d had two strong legs, I could have run and searched for my parents. During my panic, I felt the kind touch of a policeman. My words were confused when I told him my story, but somehow he understood.”

“When I was brought to the Mission, I wondered if the girls would make fun of me because I was abandoned and handicapped, but they accepted me. They, too, had sad stories. Many were orphans or had been hurt by poverty, abuse, or neglect. I have been lovingly cared for.  I feel like the girls in my flower family are my true sisters. My parents deserted me, but I’ve found the One who loves me. I’d like to find my parents so I can share with them the story of the One who saved me”.

“Kalyani said that at first she attended regular school but when it was too hard for her, she began attending the Special School”, Flat Sujata explained.

“I’ve seen some of the scented candles, unique paper bags, and other handicrafts made by Kalyani in Special School.  They are beautiful”, exclaimed Sami.

Kalyani had found a place where she belonged.
